“I need you to take them away,” she finally whispered after a prolonged silence. He didn’t speak but his eyes were fixed on the space between them. “Please.”
“Caroline,” he began and she could only shake her head frantically. She couldn’t listen to his protests. Her resolve would surely crumble if she did.
“I can’t do this anymore. I can’t keep lying to them,” she pleaded, her head dipped toward the ground the moment her voice cracked. “This is the only way.”
“No, it isn’t, love. It’s just the most convenient for you,” he hissed without trying to hide that bit of malice in his tone.
“Please,” she said again, raising her gaze until it locked with his. “Take them away.”
“You don’t know what you’re asking.”
“I know exactly what I’m asking,” she retorted, finally moving to stand in front of him. “If you ever cared for me at all you’ll do it.”
“You can never take this back,” he growled and she smiled weakly. She saw right through him. She always had.
“I know,” she whispered. “I’m sorry, Nik.”
He didn’t speak and she found his silence unsettling. He took a step closer, placing his hands on her cheeks. His eyes searched hers for any sign of hesitance from her request. Instead she gave him a small little nod.
Caroline Forbes was never meant to fall for him the way she had. He made sure she would forget him entirely.
